Jail Issues

As Sheriff of Clayton County, my first step on day one will be to engage a professional jail consulting company to conduct a thorough evaluation of our jail facilities.

This assessment will focus on identifying security vulnerabilities and proposing actionable solutions to enhance safety for both employees and inmates. By presenting a comprehensive report to the county commissioners, we will have a clear roadmap for needed improvements, ensuring that our jail operates with the highest standards of security. A well-secured facility is paramount in preventing accidental inmate releases, escapes, and the introduction of contraband, which ultimately safeguards the integrity of our justice system.

In alignment with our goal of creating a safer environment, I plan to replace the current security specialist position with certified correctional officers from Georgia. This change will ensure that our staff is trained to address the unique challenges of a correctional setting, fostering a more secure atmosphere within the jail. Additionally, I will implement work programs specifically designed for non-violent inmates, focusing on rehabilitation and teaching valuable skills. These initiatives not only prepare inmates to reintegrate into society but also contribute positively to Clayton County, reducing recidivism and promoting community engagement.

By prioritizing safety and rehabilitation, my vision for the Clayton County Jail will ultimately lead to a more efficient correctional system that benefits both the community and the inmates. This approach will help mitigate potential lawsuits and save taxpayer money, as we invest in programs that yield positive outcomes rather than costly legal battles. Together, we can transform our jail into a facility that not only protects but also rehabilitates, fostering a safer and more productive Clayton County for all residents.

Respectfully,

Cornell “CJ” Madison
